Our curriculum
We follow the Northern Ireland Curriculum, taught through topics that make use of the village, the shore and the countryside around us.
In Foundation Stage (P1 and P2) much of the learning happens through structured play. Children learn to listen, to take turns and to talk about what they are doing, as well as beginning to read, write and work with number.
Through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 the work becomes more formal, but the principle stays the same: children learn best when the work makes sense to them and when they can see why it matters.
Areas of learning
What children study
- Language and Literacy
- Daily reading, phonics in Foundation Stage, and writing across a wide range of purposes and audiences.
- Mathematics and Numeracy
- Practical, mental and written mathematics with a strong focus on number confidence and problem solving.
- The World Around Us
- History, geography and science taught through topics that make use of Killyleagh and Strangford Lough.
- The Arts
- Art and design, music and drama, including whole-class singing and our junior choir.
- Personal Development and Mutual Understanding
- Wellbeing, relationships, resilience and the shared values at the heart of integrated education.
- Physical Education
- Weekly PE, swimming in Key Stage 2, and daily activity in our playground and field.
Assessment and reporting
Teachers assess children's work day to day as part of ordinary teaching. Formal written reports go home in June, and parent–teacher meetings are held in the autumn and spring terms. If we have a concern, we will contact you long before a report is due.
Pupils with additional needs are supported through personal learning plans, reviewed with parents each term by our SENCo.
